Here’s a question every contractor should ask:
“If someone visited my website today, would they clearly understand what makes us different or how we can solve their problem?”
The truth is, many contractor websites are either missing, outdated, or simply not doing it’s job – and that leads to missed opportunities every single day.
Let’s break down a few key ideas that could make a massive difference for your business.
1. Don’t Have a Website Yet? You’re Losing More Than You Think
If you’re relying only on word-of-mouth or referrals – which are great, but not predictable – you’re missing out on qualified buyers who are searching online for what you do right now.
Many people look for a website before contacting a business. And not just any website—a professional, trustworthy one that helps them feel confident about taking the next step.
Without a website, you’re invisible to most of your best potential customers. Half the battle sometimes is to simply show up whenever someone needs you and a website will do that for your business.
Plus with AI tools like ChatGPT and others, people don’t just “search”—they research. And many times the AI tools will recommend companies and websites to the person researching.
Also is the credibility aspect. Sometimes customers just want to be able to find you online to give them a sense of confidence in going with your company.
I had a client tell me once that the main reason he wanted a website in the first place is because he had a customer one time who told him that they wanted to go with his company, but when they tried to look him up online they couldn’t find his website (he didn’t have one at the time) and that it made them second-guess their decision like his business wasn’t legitimate or something. It wasn’t fair. His business was as legitimate as legitimate could be. But it was the reality he had to deal with.
(By the way we solved that problem for him, he now has a great looking website so he doesn’t have to worry about that type of thing happening anymore).
2. Have a Website but Not Maintaining It? It Can Be Falling Behind.
Even a decent website can get stale.
I’ve seen this thing alot. You paid a bunch of money 10 years ago for what was a nice website at the time, and then you haven’t done anything with it since. It looks exactly the same now as it did back them, but during that time, technology has changed, Google has changed, your business has changed, the competition has changed, everything has changed, but the website is still frozen in time.
The solution to this is to keep your website updated and growing each month by adding useful, high quality content, articles and other resources that help to expand it’s online visibility, popularity and build authority.
Meaning, if you’re not actively adding new content, updating pages, or building your site out over time, it’s likely being outranked by competitors who are doing this on their’s.
From my experience, the top contractors in any market tend to have active and growing websites with dozens (or hundreds) of pages—each one helping them rank for more searches and bring in more leads.
Search engines (and AI tools) rely on content to figure out what your business is about. No content = no visibility.
Just think about it like this, if company A has 100 high quality pages on their website, and company B only has 5 pages on their’s, which website in this example do you think probably has the advantage when it comes to being found online?
3. Have a Website but Not Proud of It? That’s Fixable.
If you feel embarrassed when someone asks for your website—or if you hesitate to share it—that’s a sign something probably needs to change.
I’ve seen it before. Someone asks you for your website so they can check you out and that’s when you get that weird feeling of hesitation or the need to start explaining why the website looks the way that it does.
My view: You should feel confident sending prospects to your website and you should at least generally like the way it looks. The website should reflect your professionalism, craftsmanship, and the kind of quality work you deliver. A modern website doesn’t need to be flashy, but it needs to be clear, fast, and professional.
If you don’t like the way your website looks, or you’re somewhat embarrassed by it, or maybe you don’t even have a website, don’t worry about it too much; the good news is that it’s a solvable problem.
If you have a web person, call them and tell them you want them to revamp the way the website looks and have it updated and they should know what to do from there (if you’re not sure who to call or don’t have anybody, you can call us).
The Goal Isn’t Perfection. It’s Progress.
You don’t need the perfect website. You just need one that works.
A professional, modern site is your digital storefront. It should be attracting, informing, and converting potential customers—24/7.
Don’t let analysis paralysis hold you back. The worst website is no website. The second worst is one that gets ignored.
Start where you are. Improve as you go. And if you’re ready, start thinking about how your site can become your best sales tool.
